his listing is for a vintage Otto Link "Super" Tone Master mouthpiece for baritone saxophone. It is a late Pompano Beach, Florida era piece, with "USA" stamped on the shank, and the facing number (7*) on the side in small font.
This mouthpiece is in very good used condition, although it has been played a lot, and has the honest wear to show for it. All of the gold plating is worn off (not at all uncommon for an STM from this era) exposing the underlying nickel. The nickel is also worn through to the base brass in some spots, particularly on the table and baffle. You may wish to have it lightly refaced and replated, although that is by no means necessary. The facing (tip, table, and rails) are free of any nicks, chips, gouges, etc., and I don't believe that it has been previously refaced. The tip opening measures .115", which is right on spec. There is some minor tooth gouging on the bite plate. Depending on where you place your teeth, you might want to fill it with epoxy and smooth it. Personally, I wouldn't, because indents are quite far forward (towards the tip), and I would have my teeth placed well behind them. I would just cover the whole area with a clear mouthpiece patch.
One last thing to note is that there is a metal ring added to the very end of the shank. To be honest, I'm not quite sure what to make of it. Upon seeing it, my initial thought was that it was a shank extension, but closer inspection reveals that it does not extend the shank any longer. I do notice that the seam line, where the two 'halves' of the mouthpiece were brazed together, is visible (although it doesn't appear to be separating). Maybe a prior owner was concerned it might split apart, although I've never heard of that happening to an Otto Link (or any other mouthpiece constructed in this manner). The only other possibility I could think of is that someone who believes in that voodoo that adding mass to your mouthpiece can change how it sounds put this ring on for that reason, although it doesn't seem to add much weight. At any rate, the band is a good match, and looks quite natural on the mouthpiece. I can't get it off, so I'm not sure if it is soldered or epoxied on.
This mouthpiece comes with the cap and ligature shown. The ligature is not original to the mouthpiece. It is an Otto Link ligature, but it is a bit newer. It is in excellent condition. It has not been bent or cracked, and the screw works properly. The cap is a little bent up, but functional.
